World Heritage Committee meeting Krakow,Poland, designated Asmara as UNESCO world heritage city.
The committee reviewed nominations of 33 sites for UNESCO’s World Herigate List.
Judges are cited, by BBC, as saying : “Architecture from the colonial era left an “exceptional example” of modernism,…’”
Asmara has about 400 modernist buildings from that era. Fiat Tiaglero, a gas station architecturally designed to look like an aeroplane, which was build in 1938 is one of those famous buildings.
The report further cited UNESCO as saying that Asmara was “an exceptional example of early modernist urbanism at the beginning of the 20th century and its application in an African context”.
