Though a lot of progress has been made on the front of mental illness and wellness in the Ethiopian community, the sad reality is that it is still largely treated an a taboo subject. Consequently, people who are suffering under the weight of anxiety, depression and other mental maladies prefer to struggle in silence than to open up and seek help. This lack of awareness and the abundance of shame that surrounds mental illness has been a catalyst for countless suicides in every corner of our community; a crisis that is only growing as lockdowns, social distancing and uncertainties lead many over the edge.
To tackle this growing phenomenon, Habesha Networks is hosting an event this Sunday, March 21st at 2:30 PM EST/11:30 AM PST that is centered on identifying sources of trauma, how to address them and ultimately how to heal and thrive. The event will be broadcast live on Instagram and hosted by @Yoyo_Yohanna and @Jerusy of @DiasporaFeels and @Bethlehem.Bekele of @Kinetbet. This will be an interactive program where attendees will get chance to ask questions and provide testimonies of their own healing journeys.
For more information, you can reach out to Habesha Networks founder Melate Bekele at [email protected]. Going forward, we are going to start highlighting events that are aimed at informing the community and empowering local economies.
