These are the lessons
My father wanted to teach me
But was too busy working
Job after job
Bill after bill
He let stress rob him of time
No longer with here
My father lives on through me
The lessons he could not teach
I am here to speak
Wisdom gained through pain
I’m passing these pearls to thee
This world is steady stealing
Taking joy after joy
Committing injustice in the dark
In the name of fairness
They condition us to hate
And disavow humanity in the process
Marching and protesting
Anger and hatred
Where is it getting us
The more we shout
The less we are heard
We forget the one power we have
Is the blood that we have in common
Black, white
Left, right
Gay, straight
Faith, atheist
Dissection after dissection
We lose track of our cohesion
This is why we suffer
The ego too big
We keep eating apples
Only to choke on seeds of indifference
All suffer
But we have been conditioned
To only care about me
And forget about we
Humility and kindness no more
We are lost in vindictiveness
The devil has a field day
As he dances on our graves
The power is within us
But we give it up
For demagogues who get paid
By the same system, they pretend to hate
Within the next 24 hours
We are about to drown in tsunamis of tears
First riots over Kyle Rittenhouse
As agents and pundits
Conspire to fan flames
Only for pained people
And hurt souls follow along
Committing violence in the name of vengeance
Only to end up mired in hopelessness
After a verdict comes judgment
For too long we have tempted fate
Each time we are saved
We return to the devil within us
God is merciful and love
What is a Father to do
When his children are unruly
If we keep reaching for fires
And ignoring pleas to not do so
The only recourse is to let us reach
So we can learn through the greatest teacher
Broken waters leading to tears
Our malice will melt into compassion
The minute we realize our common walk
I wish it was not so
I prayed continuously for us to wake up
To walk away from identity politics
To disavow grievances
It’s not because I know better
It’s because I saw first hand
We have a commonality of pains
And the only way to do better in life
Is to stop being bitter at life
Alas the time has come
We shall be awakened by baptism
Short term strife
Will renew life
Our children understand
That the key to happiness
Is not through factionalism and separatism
But through community and empathy
Above all be love
If I prophecize in part
And speak tongues that touch hearts
Gain knowledge unmatched
Have faith that moves mountains
What I am I without love
Dust to dust
I am nothing without fikre (my love)
My first name is royal
But my last name “my love”
Is blessed eternal
To my wife Bethlehem
You became your name
To my son Yohannes
You baptized me with your smile
To my siblings
We rose above tears
To humanity writ large
Please I beg you
Stop with grudges
Find love where hate resides
The only path to redemption
Is through love
To my father Fikremariam
I know you are proud of me
To my mom Sara
I miss you dearly
To my father God in heaven
Please forgive me
And let me know in my heart
That I am loved by you
And that is enough
Here is what I know
We are worth more than sparrows
But guilt and shame
the devil’s twin lassos
Keep us in bondage in perpetuity
If we only knew
All we have to say is “I’m sorry” once
All is forgiven eternally
I pray this above all
Let evil reign no more
May forgiveness be first and foremost
Heal each hurting soul
Even he who rebelled against you
Envy led him to commit treason
But love shall redeem him as he chooses it
May his followers understand that too
May humanity be redeemed through your love
Amen::
