2020 has been a year like none before, a truly unprecedented year that we are still trying to understand. Award winning filmmaker and actress Salome Mulugeta distilled this election cycle in a video clip that gets to the heart of the matter. What matters is voting for people who will impact your life and those in your community, and this is precisely why the Georgia elections matter. Check out my interview with Salome below as she discusses the upcoming elections and why it is vital to use our collective voices in order to gain collective redresses to our grievances.
Teodrose Fikremariam: what is the importance of voting?
Salome Mulugeta: voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities that U.S. citizens have. About 150 million American citizens are qualified to vote. Unfortunately, many don’t. They give up on a chance to choose leaders and representatives who will do things that are important to them.
Teodrose Fikremariam: Why must we vote?
Salome Mulugeta: Nobody can force anyone to vote. But many citizens do vote, because voting lets them tell the government what they want it to do for them.
Teodrose Fikremariam: Does every vote really count?
Salome Mulugeta: It’s also important for citizens to know how to work the voting machines or to mark the ballots they’ll be using when they vote, so that their votes will be counted. Why is that so important? Because every vote counts! An election might be decided by a single vote and history would be changed because a person got…or lost…that one vote!
Below is a special preview of Salome’s documentary of the 2020 elections that highlights the imperative of voting and why it is CRUCIAL to get our voices heard through ballot boxes.
