I am an avid watcher of the Voice, American Idol and the various shows that gives unknown singers the chance to be discovered and burst into our collective psyches. Here is one thing I have learned over the years of observing one singer after another step up to microphones to try their hands at covering musical stars: do not try to channel Whitney Houston. Many have tried but I can count on one finger how many have actually succeeding in doing justice to legendary vocalist known as “the Voice”.
Let me introduce you to THE ONE person I have found who literally sent shivers down my back and gave me “goosies” the minute I heard her belt Whitney’s iconic song “the Greatest Love of All”. Her name is Glenda Hulita Elisabeth Batta but she goes by the stage name of Glennis Grace. Though she has been gracing music lovers ever since she was a child, she was introduced to a wider audience in 2018 when she made an appearance on America’s Got Talent. There are very few who are able to grab a crowd by the neck the way Glennis did that evening; even the ever grumpy Simon Cowell was moved awed by her rendition of Whitney’s “I Want to Run to You”.
I spend a lot of time writing about the ills of this world and prodding readers to think about the way we are manipulated by the ruling class, but I am very mindful to not lose myself in the vagaries of our time and find moments to breath in the beauties and melodies that bless us on a daily basis. I am reminded of the movie “Life is Beautiful” when I gave a tad too much at the depressing news of pandemics, deaths and injustices that proliferate around our planet, just like the Roberto Benigni’s character made it a point to protect his son from the horrors of concentration camps, we too must protect ourselves and our loved ones from iniquities that can mug us into depression if we let them.
It is for this reason that I turn your attention to Glennis Grace and beseech you to listen to her melodies. When you listen to her enchanting voice, be fully present and turn off the chatter that is going on in your mind. Just breath in her soaring aria and you will find a moment of respite despite the breaking news of sorrows that confound us the minute we get out of bed. If you listen without watching Glennis perform, you will forget who is singing and you will be taken back to the times that Whitney was still with us and the ways she used to move us into tears each time she ripped the room open with her vocal chords.
This article has a special meaning for me, my father—who passed away almost twenty years ago from lung cancer—used to love two singers. Etta James and Whitney Houston, that’s it, that was his list. So listening to Glennis perform coaxes tears from my eyes as I remember the way my dad cried listening to Whitney’s “One Moment in Time”. I miss my father sorely and I miss Whitney as well, but I am comforted knowing that my dad is still with me through memories and Whitney is survived through her unending melodies. .@GlennisGrace truly lives up to her name, she graces us all with her soothing voice; as she croons, she does Whitney Houston proud. #GracingWhitney Click To Tweet
